OSCE media freedom representative condemns attacks on Ukrainian journalists, calls on authorities to enhance safety of media professionals

VIENNA, 23 July 2013 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatović, today condemned the recent attacks on Ukrainian journalists.

Mijatović raised the case of Oleg Bogdanov, a journalist with Internet-based newspaper “Dorozhnyi Kontrol” that reports on alleged irregularities in the work of the traffic police. Bogdanov was attacked by two persons on 21 July near his house in Donetsk. He suffered serious injuries.

The Representative also expressed her concern regarding a reported attack on journalists at a demonstration in the centre of Kyiv on 18 July, which was dispersed by the police who reportedly used force against media representatives, although they had clearly presented their press cards. As a result, several journalists of “5 Kanal” TV suffered injuries.

“As the safety of journalists is essential to preserve the right to freedom of expression, law enforcement bodies should be committed to protect their rights and assist them in the implementation of their professional duties,” said Mijatović.

“I call on the authorities to do their utmost to ensure the safety of journalists and bring perpetrators of the attacks to justice. In this regard, I welcome the fact that the Working group on freedom of speech and protection of journalists under the President of Ukraine will oversee the investigation of both incidents,” said Mijatović.

“My Office stands ready to support Ukraine with all means available to prevent violence against and ensure the safety of journalists.”
