OSCE Representative condemns killing of journalist in the Netherlands

HAMBURG, Germany, 9 December 2016 – OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović today condemned the murder of journalist Martin Kok who was shot dead near Amsterdam yesterday evening.

“This murder is a horrific reminder of the risks and dangers journalism as a profession carries with it. Journalists must be free and safe to report on any issues they choose,” Mijatović said. “I trust that this murder will be swiftly and thoroughly investigated by the authorities and that the perpetrator will be brought to justice.”

Kok was a freelance journalist reporting on criminal issues published on the website Vlinderscrime. The 49-year old journalist had been subject to multiple threats and attacks connected to his work in the past, and earlier this year a bomb was discovered under his car.

“My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues,” Mijatović said.
