OSCE media freedom representative calls for immediate release of detained journalists in Turkey

VIENNA, 10 August 2017 - OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Désir today expressed deep concern regarding the issuance of arrest warrants for 35 journalists and the resulting detention of nine journalists today in Istanbul, Turkey.

“The 35 arrest warrants and the detention of journalists seem to be yet another baseless attack against journalists in Turkey and exemplify the alarming media freedom situation in the country,” Désir said.

Earlier today arrest warrants were issued for 35 journalists from various news outlets on charges of “being a member of a terrorist organization”. Nine of the journalists have been detained in Istanbul. The remaining 26 journalists are currently under investigation, which includes searches of the journalists’ homes.

“Countries committed to democratic principles must protect the freedom of speech and expression as a cornerstone of society. Authorities that act to undermine the work of journalists and silence those who voice disagreement are in direct violation of international standards and commitments,” the Representative said. “I urgently call on the authorities to release all journalists currently in custody or imprisoned in the country.”
