Media viability is the ability of media outlets and media landscapes to produce unbiased, fact-based journalism which informs audiences and enables individuals to form their own opinions on issues relevant to society.

Our work

Our thematic and programmatic tasks

To achieve media viability, media organizations require not only a stable financial base, technological means to reach their audiences, access to information and the trust of their audiences, but also a regulatory framework that allows them to operate freely in accordance with professional standards. In recent years, digital transformation, new economic realities and changing user habits and preferences have threatened the viability of media organisations and landscapes. The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media monitors the development of legal frameworks regarding the freedom and viability of media, and assists participating States in developing them.

Learning, training and education

Strengthening competence

The OSCE offers courses and learning resources to support practitioners and other interested audiences in the OSCE participating States.
