Enhancing protection of journalists under severe political pressure

In recent years, as a result of systematic repression of human rights and fundamental freedoms in some OSCE participating States, numerous independent journalists have been forced into exile to escape threats of imprisonment, harassment or violence in retaliation for their work.

Our work

Our thematic and programmatic tasks

The project “Enhancing protection of journalists under severe political pressure” aims to promote an enabling and safe working environment for journalists in exile. It advocates for protective measures and supports responses that enable journalists to continue exercising their professional activities.

In line with OSCE commitments, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media (RFoM) advocates for the safety of journalists in exile as well as the importance of supporting their ability to carry out journalistic work even from exile. The OSCE RFoM does so by facilitating dialogue among various stakeholders to address the challenges faced by affected media professionals and promote a more sustainable approach to supporting them.

As part of the project, the OSCE RFoM launched a report in September 2025, which offers a comprehensive analysis of the challenges faced by journalists in exile.
